“Pmara Jutunta Girl”

From the artist:
This is a photograph that I took of a beautiful little girl that I met last year when I visited an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory. While I was visiting her community, I was overwhelmed by the injustices that so many Aboriginal communities face in Australia today. One of the injustices that resonated with me the most was the lack of educational opportunities for Aboriginal children living in remote communities. Many of them do not finish high school past Year 9 and many find it difficult to read and write. Yet the face of this beautiful young girl reminds me that there is still hope. Unlike many children in the community, she enjoyed going to school every day and learning how to read and write. I was encouraged by her resilience and determination to go to school even though many of her friends and family do not.
