Vanity by Jess Hodgkinson

Vanity
Jess Hodgkinson
Etching/Aquatint and Collagraph (“Parched Earth”)

From the artist:
“I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.” Ecclesiastes 1:14
In this series I set out to glorify God in my art making, I wanted to make art that spoke of the incredible mystery He is and the awe inspired by that. I found that the more I thought about it the more I realised my own limitations in doing so, God cannot be boxed in or reduced down and stuck in a frame on a gallery wall.  Moreover, I didn’t need to create anything for God as he had already created the greatest masterpiece in the world for us to marvel at. The world is beautiful, yet we can be so arrogant. These etchings have I think actually taught me more about myself than God, thus it is my vanity revealed in trying to do the opposite, or even believing that I could in the first place.

“All are from Dust”
